NEWS ARCHIVE
You’re Invited!
Please come to hear a presentation on planning work that has been done for your parish’s future needs. Tuesday, June 24th at 6:30 in the Parish Hall.
We are blessed to be a vibrant parish in an attractive and very desirable city and neighborhood. Because we face real constraints on ways we can continue to serve our parish and school, good stewardship dictates that we plan wisely and well in advance for the future.
Since late last year a group of Christ the King parishioners and School parents has been working with architects and engineers to develop a broad concept for how our campus might develop over the next 20 years and beyond. While much detail must be added over time, a long term vision has been developed taking into consideration the work done by earlier planning efforts.
This is a preliminary concept and the committee is soliciting input from our parish and school communities, as well as the neighborhoods around us.
Please join us in the Parish Hall at 6:30 on Tuesday, June 24th for an early look at the work done so far by the committee, architects, and engineers.

Welcome Easter Crowds
Easter is calculated as the Sunday after the first full moon of the spring
equinox. Easter is early this year. The Resurrection celebrated so soon after Christmas seems out of season.
We have just retold the story of our redemption. Liturgists tell us this is not an empty remembrance of events past but a living reenactment of those same events in our own time. It is all out of sync, out of season, according to our mortal clocks.
A young man, a God man, abandoned by friends, struck down in his prime at the hands of his enemies, a victim of his own goodness. “Ours were the sufferings he bore; ours the sorrows he carried. Through his wounds, we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5) “Greater love no one has than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13)
Palm Sunday set the stage. We got a chance to declare our loyalty to Christ our King, to wave a palm blessed in our hands and to join, in our mind’s eye, the voices of children singing hosannas of triumph, joy, promise and expectation.
But this note of triumph is short lived as the story of the Passion unfolds in narrative that dramatizes the greatest story ever told. Jesus is agonized, betrayed, scourged, crowned and crucified. He becomes a Savior with whom those under the cross today can identify, believe in, hope in. Whatever cross we may have to carry in life, we can do so in his footsteps, knowing that they all lead to Easter triumph.
Because of Easter, we are all glory bound. Easter has already marked us out for life that never ends. Like the disciples at Emmaus, we journey today with the Risen One following the way, sharing the scriptures. This Easter Day we recognize him in our breaking of the bread. We hail him as Thomas did, living and real, “My Lord and my God”. Then we continue to spread the news as he goes before us.
Go from here, Easter crowds. Go in peace; the Easter mass is ended but he continues to unfold its glorious mystery in our lives. Happy Easter! Alleluia.
Solemn Benediction

Hosanna! Hosanna!
Come and carry palm branches and walk with the donkey
as we enter into “Jerusalem” on our Lenten journey.

Sunday, March 16 on the plaza at 8:30 am. Seats will be
reserved at the 9 am Mass.
About Lent
The following regulations for
fasting and abstinence are observed throughout Lent:
- Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday,
Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent by all
Catholics 14 years of age and older.

The Great O Antiphons
This year we continue a new Cathedral tradition...singing the “Great O’s” as
part of Evening Prayer. The Liturgy of the Hour will be celebrated in the
D’Youville Chapel every night of the final week of Advent. These intimate
services will feature the traditional chant and prayer of the Advent season
and provide a 25 minute respite from the frenzy of the season. Prayer will
begin at 6 pm on Monday, December 17 through Friday, December 21.
Prayer will begin at 7 pm on Saturday, December 22 and Sunday,
December 23.
The Twelve Days of Christmas
Despite what secular culture implies, the twelve days of Christmas do
not lead up to Christmas Eve but begin Christmas night and continue
through to Twelfth Night, the eve of the Feast of the Epiphany
(traditionally on January 6). In the Western church, Epiphany is
usually celebrated as the time the Wise Men or Magi arrived to present
gifts to the young Jesus. In the Middle Ages, this period was one of
continuous feasting and merry-making. American colonial tradition
was that on Epiphany all Christmas decorations were taken down and
Christmas foods were consumed on Epiphany morning. Many
traditions involve the preparation of a special food. In some cultures,
especially Hispanic and Latin American cultures, January 6 is observed
as Three Kings Day, or simply the Day of the Kings (la Fiesta de Reyes,
el Dia do los Tres Reyes). Even though December 25 is celebrated as
Christmas in these cultures, January 6 is often the day for giving gifts. In some places it is traditional to give Christmas gifts for each of the
Twelve Days of Christmas. Others light the Yule Log on Christmas Day
and let it burn each of the twelve nights.
French and English celebrations of Twelfth Night included a King’s cake, remembering the visit of the Three Magi, and ale or wine.
Italian children expect a visit from La Befana, an old woman who sheltered the Magi but was unable to tell them where to
find the Christ Child.
However you celebrate…..Happy Epiphany!
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ
What a joy to be able to offer such a greeting because Jesus
has made us his brothers and sisters through the mystery
we celebrate at Christmas. “The Word was made flesh and made his dwelling with us.” (John 1:14)
The Cathedral of Christ the King is one such dwelling place, seasonally adorned with the symbols of his presence: the evergreen trees betoken a God who never grows old or tired in his love for us; the lights which twinkle and burn portraying the light of the world defying all darkness; the carols echo the song of the angels with a message for the ages: “...this day a savior has been born to you.” (Luke 2:11); the gifts and messages of love
exchanged among us reflect the love gifts of the magi pointing to lives placed in God’s secure hands.
Christmas is about love expressed and lived. Scripture tells us “God is love” and “those who live in love live in God and God lives in them.” It is somehow easier to experience the meaning and power of this great mystery in the Christmas culture and celebration.
A special welcome to our Christmas congregation who forms that sacred gathering in which the Christ child finds an altogether fresh and powerful presence among us. He lives on in the memories which fill our minds and the love which fills our hearts. He lives in the stories told from the pulpit and the Christmas story still proclaimed as Good News for all people. Jesus lives in the bread and wine around which we gather and which we receive so that he can enter into our lives and homes, our work and our world through those of us who receive him in faith.
Jesus Emmanuel, who found his first dwelling in a stable, now enters a world still in sore need of the salvation he came to bring. Our broken, weary world can rejoice that each of us bears a message of hope from a God who has the power and the will to save us. We must find a way to send that message, not
only to the war torn places in the region of his birth (Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Israel), but also every other place on the face of our small planet where people are at odds with one another.
But Christmas power and wonder, joy and hope, peace and love must first begin right here — in our own church, hearts and homes. God Emmanuel has come a knocking. May he find an entrance and a welcome among us as we make our most precious gift to him — the gift of ourselves. Happy Christmas and God bless you everyone.
Father Kenny
Feast of Mary, the Mother of God
Tuesday, January 1 is the Feast of Mary, the Mother of God and is a holyday
of obligation. Masses will be Monday evening at 5:30 pm and Tuesday at

Advent Penance Day
Please join us Wednesday, December 19 for our Advent Day of Penance.
Priests from around the Archdiocese will hear confessions from 7 am to 7
pm (except during Mass times) in the Cathedral. This is a wonderful
opportunity to prepare our hearts for the coming of the Lord at Christmas.
A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten
On Sunday afternoon December 16th at 4 pm, as the sun begins to set on the
Advent season and the liturgical world turns toward the final preparations for
the birth of the Savior, The Cathedral of Christ the King will offer a delightful
concert, Benjamin Britten’s beloved A Ceremony of Carols. Women from
three of the Cathedral’s choirs (the Schola Nova, the Cathedral Ensemble and
the Cathedral Choir) will join their voices, accompanied by Harpist Nella
Rigel, in one of the most infectiously joyous musical offerings ever composed
for the holiday season.
The concert is open to the public and the entire diocesan family is invited to
attend. A free will offering will be accepted at the door, and no reservations
are required. There is ample parking. For further info, call the Cathedral
Concert line at 404-233-2145 x470.
Our Lady of Guadalupe
Please join Archbishop Gregory this Wednesday, December 12 at midday in
the Cathedral for a special Mass, Ecclesial Procession and Crowning of Our
Lady of Guadalupe, Queen and Mother of the Americas.
Evening Mass in
celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe will take place at 7:30 pm
followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.
Advent Wreath
Since ancient itmes a wreath has simbolized victory, The circular shape reminds us of the eternal love of God who has no beginning and no end. Green is the liturgical color that expresses hope in God's never ending love. The boughs of the fir tree are always in every green in every season of the year. These evergreen boughs which form the wreath remind us that God and His Revelation are unchanging even as the fir tree is ever green.
The four color candles divide the time of Advent, each candle representing one of the "four thousands years" Scripture gives as the time span from Adam's fall to the birth of the Savior.
The first purple candle is lit on the First Sunday of Advent and during the week that follows. Purple simbolizes a time of penance and preparation, as well as royalty.
Lessons and Carols
The Cathedral of Christ the King will present its eighteenth annual
presentation of Advent Lessons and Carols, Patriarchs and Prophets. This
event moves to a new date and time, Sunday afternoon, December 2 at 4 pm. The Cathedral’s Boy and Girl Choirs as well as Coro Hispano and the
Cathedral Ensemble will join the Cathedral Choir and Schola Nova in this
colorful event which marries beautiful music with the dramatic readings that
prophesy and prepare the way of the Lord.
The season of Advent is one of joyful expectation, and this festival of choirs will celebrate in the superb visual and acoustic environment of the Cathedral, illuminated by the late afternoon glow of the Cathedral’s stained glass windows, candlelight and the sparkling music of the season. Hymns, chants
and songs, familiar and new by such composers as Handel, Britten, Bach and
Bainton will ring out in the gathering dusk.
The program shines with the joyous spirit of the holiday season and all members of the parish family are warmly invited to attend. For more info, call
the Cathedral Concert Line at 404-233-2145 x470.

the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles.
His Gospel contains the canticles Magnificat,
Benedictus and Nunc Dimittisand, the most
detailed and familiar version of the Christmas
story. Luke is the patron saint of artists,
physicians and unmarried men. His symbol, a winged bull, can be
found in the stained glass on the doors into the Cathedral. In addition

with a communal celebration of Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the
Hours at 6:30 pm on Thursday, October 18 in the Cathedral.

fresh, clean water two times a week. The Pink
Flamingo project (see page 4) raises funds for
this ongoing project sponsored by our Life
Teen Ministry.

An Invitation to Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers, Ushers, Sacristans and Altar Servers
You are warmly invited to a morning of celebration, Saturday,
September 29 at 8 am beginning with Mass with Archbishop Gregory.
From there, he will address our Ministers in the Parish Hall as principal speaker.
Each week we offer 13 weekend Masses and 16 weekday Masses at the Cathedral
and you, as volunteers, help to make this worship ministry possible and fruitful.
Upward of 500 Ministers train and schedule themselves to give God fitting
worship worthy of the mysteries we proclaim. In the background, there are those
who prepare and beautify the sacred space, care for the altar linens, candles and
vessels and clean and tidy as they tend to the ministry of the sacristy on a daily
basis. Then there is the ministry of the congregation charged with full conscious
participation. This is the focus of all our efforts.
This incredible coming together for the worship of God requires constant coordination, preparation, training and celebration. Monsignor Kenny is setting aside September 29 to honor and celebrate what you so generously do; to provide fuller understanding of Liturgy and to offer facilitated breakout sessions for
sharing among your peers in ministry.
Please join Archbishop Gregory for the 8 am Mass in the Cathedral to begin our morning. From there, he will address our Ministers in the Parish Hall as principal
speaker. Afterwards, we will move into facilitated sessions with priests from the
Archdiocese who are experts in theology and will discuss interesting topics
pertaining to the different parts of the Mass. This focus on liturgical education
will enrich our understanding of our individual roles and the entire Liturgy. We
will plan to conclude at 12 pm.
Please mark your calendars for September 29 and RSVP to Donna Lowry at
dslowry1@bellsouth.net with your attendance no later than September 21.

Team Members needed for
Small Christian Communities Ministry
In his Mission of the Redeemer Pope John Paul II taught that small Christian communities “are a sign of vitality within the Church, an instrument of formation and evangelization, and a solid starting point for a new society based on a ‘civilization of love’.” Small Christian Communities are just the place where our parishioners can connect with others and together grow in faith and in the love of God. Would you be willing to help form the Team for this exciting new ministry? Please contact Teresa Vigil at 404-233-2145, x439 or tvigil@ctking.com for more info.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home Medical Supply Fund
Representatives from the parish will have tickets for valuable prizes for the Medical Supply Fund for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home before and after all Masses the weekends of September 15-16 and 22-23. The Cancer Home relies fully on donations for its support. The Sisters have always reached out indiscriminately to terminally ill patients. There has never been a charge for the care they offer to the end. This is our chance to support their great mission of mercy.
