Updates on Cathedral’s Campus Expansion
June 30th, 2009
Dear Parish Family,
I want to update you on our parish planning and our application for the Special Use Permit.
A critical part of the planning process was securing neighborhood and the Neighborhood Planning Unit (NPU) approval for the anticipated changes to the campus. Over the past two years, we have worked with various neighborhood associations, particularly the Peachtree Heights East Neighborhood Association (PHENA), to design a plan outline that fit the needs of the parish and was acceptable to our neighbors. PHENA, the neighborhood in which the Cathedral resides, approved our plans with the exception of the proposed parking deck. After much consideration, Christ the King withdrew the parking deck from the Special Use Permit application. Click HERE for a good picture of the revised blueprint for the campus.
The withdrawal of the parking deck allowed PHENA to endorse our proposal. With no opposition, Neighborhood Planning Unit B (NPU-B) and the Atlanta Zoning Review Board (ZRB) have each unanimously approved Christ the King’s application for a Special Use Permit. The Atlanta City Council is expected to give final approval in July.
I want to thank all the volunteers who donated their time and expertise to move us forward in our planning. And I thank our neighbors for their patience, their constructive criticism and their spirit of cooperation throughout this process.
Once the City Council approves our Special Use Permit, we can begin the detail planning, focusing on the following areas:
• Green space (Courtyard and Courtyard Park)
• Additional floor/classroom space (Commons and Recreation Building)
• Improved traffic flow
• Renovations to existing campus buildings
Input will continue to be solicited from the Pastoral Council, the School Board and the various ministries of the parish.
I am delighted with the progress we have made and I will keep you updated as we move forward with this exciting planning for the future of Christ the King parish and school.
